What therapists wish their clients knew about therapy !
“I think you need therapy” / “Man, just get some help!” — these phrases aren’t supposed to be “triggering” or “judgmental,” right? But when such words are used as slurs, the amount of hurt or discomfort they cause is actually quite interesting to observe. Lately, I’ve been hearing these phrases thrown around as judgments, jokes, or even insults — and honestly, I’m confused. How is this supposed to be funny?
So today, let’s sit down and finally psychoeducate ourselves about what “therapy” really is. In formal terms, therapy is a form of treatment that provides professional care to individuals experiencing emotional distress or any other concerns they wish to address. And as complicated as this definition sounds, therapy is actually quite simple — though it can feel a bit daunting for some people. Here are some hard truths and realities about therapy that I wish every client, or future client, knew before starting their journey.
⭐️ Your first therapist isn’t always the one:
Taking that first step is never easy — trust me, I’ve seen four therapists so far, and it doesn’t really get easier. The first few sessions can feel heavy, but they’re always meaningful. Each therapist taught me something different — one helped me heal my inner child, another made me more self-aware. So if your first therapist doesn’t work out, don’t lose hope. They just weren’t the right fit. With a little patience, you’ll find your therapist — and it’ll be worth the wait.
⭐️ Therapy is not a “fast process”:
I totally empathise with those who would want to have “faster results” Therapy, often called a “talking cure,” takes its own sweet time to heal. In a fast-paced world like ours, waiting for progress can feel overwhelming. But remember… therapy involves a lot more than just sessions. Therapists spend time finding the right interventions, exploring techniques, and tracking your progress behind the scenes. Most importantly, healing happens when you feel safe — both with your therapist and within yourself. Good things take time, and therapy will truly be worth it in the end.
⭐️ Therapy sessions can be fun too:
There’ve been times I couldn’t wait to tell my therapist a funny story from the week. And honestly? It’s always worth it. Some laughs and giggles never hurt anyone. Sometimes, sessions end up feeling like two friends just catching up — and that’s the beauty of therapy. Because healing doesn’t always look like tears and deep talks — sometimes it’s joy, connection, and a safe space where you can just be yourself. Have you ever had one of those feel-good sessions too?
⭐️ You are not alone in therapy !
Therapy is a collaborative process …it’s not you versus your therapist, but rather you and your therapist working together toward growth and healing. So, communicate openly. Tell them how you feel, what works for you, and what doesn’t. Therapists genuinely value your feedback…it helps them understand you better and create a space that feels safe and supportive. And remember, you can be completely honest and transparent with them. It’s okay to take time to open up …therapy isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection.
